Nano-Banana and Architectural Visualization for Adaptive Reuse Projects

Nano banana visualization experiment showing how effective it is as visualizing expanded mesh for adaptive reuse projects

How do you quickly visualize architectural design for adaptive reuse projects?

One challenge with expanded mesh and perforated metal is that the complex geometry is complicated to model easily in CAD, and, in the past, Mid-Journey and Dall-E struggled to render AMICO’s architectural metals accurately in any visualization prompt; fortunately, the technology is catching up.

In our initial tests, Nano-Banana appears to be up for the complex geometry of expanded mesh. For this exploration, we envisioned a scenario where you may have a parking garage or a building facade that you aim to update, incorporating expanded mesh. Specifically, we requested Nano Banana incorporation of 48″ wide expanded mesh vertical stripes with 12″ gaps between the panels. The results were really impressive. Nano-Banana did a great job of rendering the mesh with some realism and relative accuracy.

The prompt provided is below, and the reference files can be downloaded here for those interested in experimenting with them.

Screenshots of the expanded mesh are attached (perspective, plan, and side view).  The opening of the expanded mesh diamond is 6.3″ across.  This information is to help you understand the scale, form, and dimensionality.  Image in the mesh as powder-coated white.

Examples of the expanded mesh on a parking garage are in images with ‘1625Plymoth’ in the name.  This image provides an idea of what the mesh looks like installed on a real-life parking garage.

The base image is 20230718_143204.jpg.  In the image is a parking garage.  The parking garage is 65 feet tall.

Goal of this render: I want you to create an image showing APEX01’s expanded mesh as vertical stripes cladding the parking garage. The stripes should be 48 inches wide with 12-inch gaps between them. The image should feature the exact parking garage from 20230718_143204.jpg, with the mesh included at a proper scale. The purpose is to help architects visualize what it would look like to clad the parking garage in expanded mesh.

Interestingly, if we asked it to reprocess to see what it would produce, Nano-Banana took matters into its own hands and altered the underlying image, yet still generated some accurate expanded mesh results, as shown in the image below.

You can also compare these AI-generated results with a visually similar, real-life project at 1625 Plymouth Ave.
