Multifamily Expanded Mesh Railing

The Santa Monica and Vermont Apartments is a vision for community at a metro stop consisting of 187 affordable housing units oriented around transit access, 20,000 sf of community spaces, and commercial retail. The community space perimeter is defined by the bright pink APEX01 expanded mesh railing, which serves as a visual indicator of the transition from public to private. Los Angeles’ long tradition of brightly painted vernacular buildings continues with the vivid green Bellesa expanded mesh balconies. This small-diamond expanded mesh allows the designer to create fields of color that enhance the design strategy of the facade and provide an upgraded appearance to typical commodity tube railing. At the same time, sunshades, profiled metal siding, and balconies add amenity and detail to animate and weave the design into a varied context.
