Architectural Sunshade Fin Testing – Break Forming Expanded Mesh to Add Rigidity

Expanded Mesh Sunshade on Facade Mockup

Expanded mesh can be more than a flat surface. Break forming (or bending) expanded mesh is a straightforward process and should be a design element that any architect feels free to explore. Pictured here in this mockup is Bellesa expanded mesh, which is break-formed to create a sophisticated sunshade form that gives the metal an almost two-tone appearance as it reflects light in different ways.

As metal is folded, it typically becomes more rigid. In this case, the design underwent 16 different test procedures and performed well due to the added rigidity in the forming process. The tests included vertical live load deflection, dynamic wind loading & seismic drift.

Mockups are a common part of the process for many AMICO projects. If this is a goal for your project, discuss it with your AMICO team member early on to help develop the budget and timing accordingly.
